‘Over the Top’ by Amanda Jackson

Over the Top  was commissioned by HaBYT in 2015. Amanda carried out extensive research into stories of families who lived in Hawkes Bay whose sons and daughters enlisted in WW1.The play is based on those stories. First directed by Daniel Betty, the show played at the Napier City Council Chambers as well as a number of schools. Proceeds from the Napier public shows went to the Napier RSA. This production was shortlisted for a Ministry of Youth Development Anzac award in 2015.

‘Over the Top’ will have some developments with new insights and characters being added for the 2017 season by Amanda Jackson. Directed by Peter Cottrell and assisted by Champa Maciel, the play will incorporate physical theatre  to support the scene work.

Classes are divided up into the following groups: (The first three groups attend with their parents/carers):

1. Newborn to crawling
2. Walkers
3. Kindy Kids
4. Spring Stars: School students in Yr 1 and 2 (Age 5 – 6).

The programme for each class will involve the opportunity to: create, re-create and appreciate music, explore their senses, practice balance, catch-throw-kick, enrich speech and language, improve eye-tracking, enhance memory, learn brain break exercises and develop feelings of success.

Classes will be running out of both the Havelock North Green Room and the Studio in Napier.

We are looking for young performers in the Taradale/Napier area who are in Year 7/8 (Intermediate) and would like to be in the play ‘Hoodie’ by Lindsey Price to be directed by Kate Tarrant. Rehearsals are on Mondays 3.30 – 4.30 at the Greenmeadows East Community Hall, Tait Drive, Greenmeadows. Rehearsals start Mon 25 July with the following Sunday rehearsals in term four: Sunday 6, 13, 20 November (as well as the usual Monday classes).Performance dates are: Mon 21 and Tues 22 November. No more classes after that. Cost to participate is $125 term. Includes tuition, extra rehearsals, costumes and director fees. The Players – their awesome play ‘Intercept’ is really coming along! What fabulous imaginations this group have and it’s great to see their acting skills being honed.

The Troupe – This group are busily rehearsing their Monster play and working towards learning all their lines by the end of term!

The Ensemble – Blocking has started for their sharing of readers text ‘Letters’. Sharing of work: Thursday 25 June at 5pm.

The Company – Casting is complete and rehearsals are in full swing for ‘Hoodie’. Quite a challenging piece but these talented performers are up to the challenge. Congratulations to Vikki, Freyja, Rhyva, Sally, Marina and Caitlin from this group who participated in the 48 Hour film festival with HaBYT. Congratulations to Vikki again, for her performance in ‘Over the Top’.

HaBYT – Two groups combined this week to talk about the new project ‘The Laramie Project’ with Dan. Exciting news coming about a possible performance space. Congratulations to Isabelle, Sarah, Zoe and Michael for their participation in the 48 hrs film festival. Also congratulations to Carwen, Tana, Jack and Helen for their superb performances in ‘Over the Top’.

Hastings:

The Crew – Started using simple costume for our readers theatre piece that we will be sharing with parents on Mon 22 June. Had some fun with quick hat changes and working with levels. Some vacancies in this group for next term!

The Performers – Wow! Their Monster play has come so far so quickly – loving the characterisation that is developing. Great to see so much effort going into line learning too.

Taradale:

The Entertainers – The energetic entertainers are full of enthusiasm! Some fantastic characterisation and focus happening in this class – keep up the great work! Congratulations to Amy-Grace for her fantastic performance in ‘Over the Top’.

The Wanderers – This new group has some extremely talented actors. They are exploring status and character with Peter and week brings new challenges and skill development. Congratulations to Wanderer Maite for her stunning performance in ‘Over the Top’.

Well done to all the Drama Workshop students – you are simply awesome!!!
